Understanding Pegasus Therapeutic Horseback Riding and benefits

What is therapeutic riding? American Heritage Dictionary defines “THERAPUETIC” as “having healing or curative powers; gradually or methodically ameliorative”. With the rider on horse back the riders receive range of motion (ROM) exercise which helps promote the body’s circulation and helps to stretch and to tone the muscles.

Every mounted rider in the Pegasus, Equine Therapeutic Riding Program has a team of four dedicated volunteers.

  • Two sidewalkers, one sidewalker on each side of the rider
  • Horse leader
  • And a horse of course!

Equine Therapy Program Classes

  • Pegasus has class on: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  • Classes are held October through May in the outdoor arena.
  • Each riding day usually starts at 8:30 a.m. and continues till 12:30 p.m.
  • All riders / schools are required to be at Pegasus at least 15 min prior to their scheduled class time to check-in.
  • Riders are individually fitted with state safety code riding helmets for their safety.
  • Each class is 30 minutes of (ROM) full range of motion exercise on horseback. Equine Therapy.
  • If you are unable to attend your scheduled time, please call ASAP to let us know. Be sure to get our business card with the ranch phone number for your convenience.
  • If weather is bad in some areas of the desert…DO NOT ASSUME: that it is bad at Pegasus! You can call the ranch at at (760) 772-3057 and there will be a recorded message by 7:30 am letting you know if we will be having classes that day, based on the wind, rain, etc.

Ranch Policies

  • No abusive, threatening, violent or noncompliance behavior will be tolerated on the premises of Pegasus
  • Alcohol and illegal drug use is prohibited
  • No smoking on ranch premises
  • All children must be supervised at all times
  • No running, children or adults
  • No spectators at the rails, only in designated areas
  • No Dogs, exception, service or therapy animals or Director authorized
  • Do not feed horses at any time, it’s for the horses safety
  • Do not enter the horse stalls without authorization from Stable Manager or Instructors
  • Adhere to instructions given by Program Director and Instructors
  • Work cordially and respectfully with co-volunteers, staff, riders and guests
  • Follow all safety procedures, rules and regulations
  • Report all accidents, injuries and or safety hazards to Directors or Instructors immediately
  • No cell phones, exception vibrate mode for medical reasons
  • Never talk on the phone when handling riders or horses
  • Policies listed here but not limited to this list will be enforced for the safety of everyone
